Description

The 249B01 is a preventative repair kit for the Killer Dowel Pin (KDP) on 1989-2002 5.9L Cummins engines — one of the most well-known catastrophic failure modes on the 12V and early 24V platform. The factory dowel pin behind the timing cover can vibrate loose over time, and when it falls into the timing gears it grenades the engine — bent valves, snapped timing gear, sometimes a cracked block. The repair is to catch and tie down the pin before it can move, which is exactly what this kit does.

This is the base KDP kit — just the new dowel pin and the retention tab with bolt. The retention tab welds (or bolts, depending on installer preference) into the timing cover area to hold the pin in place permanently. It's a known fix that's been in use for decades; every long-term 12V Cummins owner ends up doing this job.

If you're already pulling the timing cover for other reasons — front crank seal, gasket replacement, harmonic balancer service — adding the KDP retention is essentially free labor and prevents a $5,000+ engine rebuild later. If your truck has high mileage and the KDP repair hasn't been done, this is the single best preventative purchase on the 12V platform.
