1989-2002 Cummins HX Series Coated Rod Bearings (PDM-CB-1413HXC)
Description
Clevite HX-series coated rod bearing set for 1989-2002 Dodge Ram 2500/3500 trucks running the 5.9L Cummins (12V and 24V). Originally developed for NASCAR-type race engines, equally well-suited to any high-output diesel build where bearing survival during cold starts and oil-starvation events matters.
The H-series base bearings have hardened steel backs with thin overlay, medium eccentricity, and high crush. Enlarged chamfers give the bearing more clearance for crankshaft fillets. No flash plating — the bearing seats faster and more uniformly. The HX series adds .001" of extra clearance over the H base — useful in builds where the crank journal is on the edge of spec, or where you want extra oil film thickness for sustained high RPM running.
The coating is the real reason most diesel builders pick these. A dry-film lubricant layer sits between the bearing surface and the crank journal, which protects the bearing during the brief window after startup when the oil pump hasn't pressurized the bearings yet. Cold starts and oil starvation events do the most damage to bearings — the coating is what carries the load during those events. The coating also has moly and oil-retention additives that hold film thickness under sustained load.
Features
- Clevite HX-Series Coated Rod Bearings
- Hardened Steel Back with Thin Overlay
- Enlarged Chamfers for Crank Fillet Clearance
- +.001" Clearance over H-Series Base
- Dry-Film Coating for Cold-Start Protection
- Moly & Oil-Retention Additives in Coating
- Sold as Complete Set
- Part Number: PDM-CB-1413HXC
Notes
- Plastigauge the journals before final assembly. The HX series adds .001" of clearance — if the crank journal is already on the loose end of spec, the combined clearance may exceed what you want.
- Common pairing with the Gorilla Girdle (PDM-06021) on big-power builds.
